I am shocked and saddened to hear of Micks passing, I have been away in the Lakes walking for a week, technology free. Mick was a great lad whom I knew very well, and spent a lot of time together in his company at games during the 80s and 90s. He was a great friend to me during a difficult period in my life when I moved back to Hartlepool after getting divorced in the early 2000s. We had a bit of a falling out after that, and only saw him now and again over the last 15 years or so, just saying hello and maybe a short conversation on the bus or in the shopping centre etc. I rang him after my dad died as he liked my dad and knew he would want to know about how he died. As you do, we promised to get together for a drink but nothing transpired, I thought about contacting him from time to time but as people do, you think it can wait, I'll do it next week/month, this is why you shouldn't wait. Mick had struggled with his health since the turn of the century and I often thought about how he must be getting on.
I first met him at an away game at York one Friday night in 1981, McGowan was with him , they were having a drink after the game, they were in the car, I was on the 2am train to Durham. From then on we used to bump into each other every Friday night usually in the Blackies for last orders, which was Micks favourite pub in the early/mid 80s. I remember him giving my young children money at away games at Reading in 94 and Exeter in 97 , kind to the core and never forgetting to ask me how my mam , dad and sister were keeping, its all those little things for me that make someone a nice person. Mick didn't have it easy, losing his own mam at a young age and his dad fairly early in life, but he never felt sorry for himself.
Mick Kelly was a good decent man, a character and a loyal Pools supporter. I'm honoured to have known him.
RIP Mick

Got a job interview in Liverpool on Tuesday, but have cancelled it. I couldn't miss Mick's funeral, as his death proves, life is too short. Hope to see a few of you there, raise a glass or two for Mick , he deserves a good send off.
